Welcome to Ota City

– Your Gateway to Tokyo and Japan

Ota City, one of Tokyo’s 23 special wards, is more than just a transit stop—it's your first opportunity to experience the real Japan. With Haneda Airport located within its boundaries, Ota is often the first place visitors encounter after landing in Tokyo. But rather than rushing to the center, take a moment to discover what this unique area has to offer.

Where is Ota City?

Ota lies in the southern part of Tokyo, bordering Shinagawa Ward to the north and Kawasaki City (Kanagawa Prefecture) to the south, across the Tama River. This makes Ota not only a convenient location for Tokyo sightseeing but also an excellent base for visiting Yokohama and Kanagawa.

With access to major train lines like Keikyu, JR, and Tokyu, you can reach central Tokyo in about 20–30 minutes and Kawasaki in as little as 10 minutes.

What to See and Do

Ota is Tokyo's largest ward by area, offering everything from historical temples and peaceful gardens to lively neighborhoods and creative museums.

  • Founded in the 13th century by the Buddhist monk Nichiren, Ikegami Honmonji is one of the most prominent temples in the area. Each October, it attracts many visitors for the Oeshiki Festival, held in honor of Nichiren.

  • Ikegami Plum Garden features over 370 plum trees that bloom in late winter.

  • Tamagawadai Park is a perfect riverside spot with an exhibition room showcasing ancient kofun burial mounds.

Culture and Art

Ota is rich in arts and history:

  • Ryushi Memorial Museum – Modern Japanese painting

  • Kumagai Tsuneko Memorial Museum – Traditional Japanese calligraphy

  • Omori Nori Museum – Seaweed farming heritage

  • Katsu Kaishu Memorial Museum and Sanno Sodo Memorial Museum – Honoring important figures in modern Japanese history.

Experience Everyday Life in Tokyo

Explore retro shopping streets, local sento (public baths), and enjoy dishes like gyoza, tonkatsu, and ramen (Japanese noodle soup) in authentic neighborhood settings.

In areas like Kamata, you’ll feel the warm charm of Tokyo life, while Magome and Omori offer literary and artistic connections from Japan’s early 20th century.
