Ikegami Honmonji Temple

An Important Site Related to Nichiren

Ikegami Honmonji is a temple dedicated to Nichiren, a revered, 13th-century Buddhist monk and philosopher whose teachings formed the basis of Nichiren Buddhism. The temple was built where Nichiren died and still serves as the administrative headquarters of the Nichiren sect.

Today, the grounds are a historical and cultural gateway into the past. Admire the captivating architecture and impressive five-story pagoda. During April, the temple is especially enchanting when its delicate cherry blossoms bloom.

If you’re in the area on October 12, don’t miss the temple’s annual Ikegami Honmonji Oeshiki festival—a memorial to mark Nichiren’s passing. Held in the evening, this festival features an atmospheric parade of roughly 3,000 worshippers carrying holy lanterns.
