Passing through the Chinowa @ Haneda Shrine

What is a Chinowa?A Chinowa is a large ring made of thatch or straw.This Shinto ritual, called Nagoshi no Harae, takes place on June 30th.By passing through the ring, people are believed to be cleansed of the sins and impurities of the past six months and pray for good health and protection from illness.

How to pass through the Chinowa
When passing through a straw circle, it is customary to follow this procedure.
#Stand in front of the straw circle and give a slight bow.
#Step through the hoop with your left foot and walk around counterclockwise,returning to the starting position.
#Step through the hoop with your right foot and walk around  clockwise to returning to the starting position.
#Step through the hoop again  with your left foot and walk around counterclockwise returning  to the starting position.

Passing through the Chigonawa is not only a way to pray for good health, but also a great opportunity to experience traditional Japanese culture.
